I was shooting the Fred Hammond / Kim Burrell concert in the summer and thought I’d just try something new. Being the Photosapien that I am, I SHOULD be trying something new with my camera all the time and in this instance I wanted to attempt the free handed panoramic photo at a concert.
Panoramic shots can be tricky because you have to take multiple photos and then match them up using a photo editing program like Photoshop to create that seamless pic. Mix in moving subjects and you have a challenge. So here I am loving this concert and when the inspiration hits I look around and find a good spot on the side of the stage. Of course Fred has the crowd swooning to his Grammy Award winning songs so it was going to be tough to shoot and match this large crowd without doubling heads etc. But I didn’t want to wait for a slow track where people might be more still as I spent much time during the concert jamming to Fred’s hits myself (yes I sang along and thank GOD Almighty himself that I was near the 10 foot speakers so I was drowned out) and the concert could end at any second.
SO I propped up my camera, and fired about 8 shots, holding my camera steady and twisting my body to shoot from stage to the far wall.
As I began to put it all together, I noticed that as I anticipated, people moved and this created a twin like look when matching photos. So with some creative editing and slight of hand that David Blaine would be proud of, I got it done! I hope you like the result! Were you in the building that night?
