Why The GPS Is Not Your Best Friend

In Weddings by Sheldon

I found out that I can no longer rely on a GPS as my sole method of getting to places unknown.  Shout out to Google Maps and all of those Android map apps but I recently got run over (so to speak) because of a technology glitch.

Let’s take it from the top.

I was on my way to shoot a wedding with Maranda Elysse Photography, and because it was more than 10 centimeters from my front porch, it was mandatory that my Android GPS be my navigator.  So as usual, I drive to the edge of town and then plug in the coordinates for my day.  I was able to do this because I know the general direction I was going.  The GPS decided to all of a sudden not know where my destination was.  I felt like I was arguing with my 4yr old daughter, going back and forth entering the address and GPS telling me she doesn’t know where it is.  I knew better so I kept pressing the issue. Then, much like with said daughter, I’m outlasted and I decide to enter only the postal code and WOW it got me within 100 meters of my destination.  How nice.  So after a long 20 minute drive I desperately needed to feed my car gas.  So GPS and I decide to do the dance again. I ask for Esso gas station, she says many miles away. I ask for Petro Canada, she says another town.  I say I need a gas station, it wants to send me to Canadian Tire?!?!?!  So I ignored her and went to a mom and pop  gas shop that I’m not sure pumps gas or half and half water.

Later on, GPS then decided to not work when I was closing in on the grooms house! She simply said she does no longer has a signal. A SIGNAL! Perfect.  As bad as I wanted to put the guilt trip on her by purchasing a paper map (Sounds so 80’s right!).  But no I caved and called the Groom.  GPS decided to start working again when I left that far away town but it was too late.  I had shot the couple’s first look, wedding ceremony, the Groom and his Groomsmen and the awesome reception.

So even after fighting against that bratty uncooperative GPS, I still completed the ultimate goal of shooting some wedding photos.  Thanks for nothing.  I’m going back to paper maps, compasses and using the force to guide me.  You are on Time Out.
